Takamiya HONOKA considers himself to be just another average high school student, and someone who has become quite accustomed to the continuous antics that surround the female classmate who happens to sit next to him. Not only is Kagari AYAKA the daughter of the school chairman, but she is very talented in sports, gifted in studies and adored by many of her fellow students. But when Takamiya finds himself targeted by a sorceress who seems intent on taking his life, Kagari comes to his aid and reveals herself to be a powerful witch. Kagari further totally confuses Takamiya when she tells him that she is there to protect him, and proclaims that his both her master and her princess(?).

Unevaluated Devil Doll [series:2832#752]
(2 episodes watched)

Certainly not a high-quality story, but silent Ayaka is funny in her own way, and the scenario (world-protecting "workshop witches" vs anarchical "tower witches", and Honoka being the key item of their conflict) is explained in episode 2. The battles are more ridiculous than exciting though.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:2832#628]

I guess rule #1 for anyone attempting to write a manga or an anime script should be this: First, establish interesting characters that the reader/viewer can identify with. Then, introduce an interesting gimmick--like 'magic'--that people will respond to. You might get by if you complete part one but not part two, but you'll never produce a quality work if you skip one and rely on two. Nevertheless, this seems to be a common mistake. Maybe expanding on the personalities of characters takes too much effort and talent, while tacking on magic or fanservice or whatever takes hardly any. Anyway, Witch Craft Works made this common mistake by relying on magic while discounting character development. The assumption must have been that viewers would be so excited at the very mention of yet another magic-themed anime that they would piss themselves and wouldn't care much at all about the characters. But I was left totally unenthused at the end. Kagari is absolutely emotionless--were the makers trying to make her as shallow as they possibly could? The most notable thing about her would be her tremendous breasts. And Takamiya is, as he says, totally 'ordinary'--there is nothing whatsoever to set him apart from anybody else, at least not in episode one. This seems like another 'hot girl with supernatural powers places herself at a guy's disposal' show. He has no capabilities of his own (as of yet) but Kagari submitting to him places him on top anyhow. What's more, there are hardly any laughs (except in the ED sequence), and some slightly disturbing brutality. The thought behind this show must have been, 'let's throw together another quick magical anime, using the least time, money and talent possible'. They got what they paid for.

I was wondering what JC staff would be working on this season.
