This third season of Hakuoki is a prequel that reveals the origins of the Shinsengumi for the series such as how the group came together, gained their influence with the shogunate and first came upon the issues with the Furies that they would face in the two main seasons of the series. The group here is led by Serizawa Kamo, whose arrogance, corruption and attitude with his social standing make him an object of tension between Hijikata and the other main members of the Shinsengumi throughout this season of the series. These developments believably depict the harshness of the period as a number of influential members of the shogunate let their status of power get to their head for being samurai during the period and make for engaging tensions as he abuses his influence and earns the hostility of the main Shinsengumi members. Beyond this, the visuals and musical elements for the series are retained from the three earlier titles and haven't changed all that much. Overall, Hakuoki fans are likely to snag up this third season of the anime as it reveals more about the formation of the Shinsengumi before they met up with Chizuru.
