Hakuoki continues with its focus on Chizuru and the surviving Shinsengumi members as try to hold up against against the military of the newly established Meiji government. With this being historically-based, this does lead to tragic developments with the group as they fall victim to the inevitable change that is to come to the country they were once influential in from the Bakumatsu era. The commitment that the Shinsengumi have to one another is believable enough (especially from the first season) where you can care for the tragedies they undergo throughout this season. Beyond that, not much is different from this season as the level of visual quality here is retained, characterization is a mixed bag (Chizuru still being worthless and being around to set up this title's reverse harem implications, for example) and some elements to the series like the demons and the fate of a major character being left unexplored or vague. Still, the plot for this season was a solid and engaging one that kept me hooked throughout its short 10 episode run. If you enjoyed Hakuoki's first season, you should get similar enjoyment out of this one.
