the first season, Jormungand: Perfect Order provides more fleshing out of Koko's bodyguards and features the group on more dealings with government agencies and the criminal underworld to any international locale they visit. The series is pretty much set up not much differently from the first season in its focus on Koko and her group for its first two-thirds, with a few hints dropped that Koko has huge plans in store to greatly benefit her. The character focus on members of Koko's group was still solid as we get to know what they were doing before joining up with Koko and the series retains its gritty mood exploring the sometimes over-the-top and insane actions committed by Koko and her group in heated situations. The nicely detailed artwork and fluid battle scenes are even intact in this season. What does hurt this second season for me comes with what we come to learn of Koko's grand plan for the final third of the show. The idea she comes up with is quite out there compared to earlier episodes in the series (too much so considering what we seen otherwise thus far) and has some logical holes to it with how she desires things. With this arc, the anime even tries to paint some sympathy towards Koko in her reasoning behind these plans. But unlike her bodyguards, Koko never got enough depth, outside of her over-the-top theatrics and occasionally ruthless actions while on arms deals, where I would consider her a sympathetic character. The ending to the series even felt quite anticlimactic with a jump two years into the future with the characters and abruptly ending the series just as Koko is about to get into the final part of her plan. While the last third of Perfect Order wasn't enough to completely derail the series for me, I do admit that I was somewhat disappointed with how things were executed in it. Otherwise, the first two-thirds of the anime aren't much different from the first season in their focus on Koko's group and its fun, gritty look into Koko's encounters with the criminal underworld. The second season is still worth a look if you enjoyed Jormungand's first season. Last updated Friday, December 28 2012. Created Friday, December 28 2012. |
