Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai. The first and last episodes of the series are comical filler with hit or miss delivery in its laughs for me. Those who craved the horror/ drama element to Higurashi won't enjoy these two episodes. On the other hand, the middle three episodes of Rei offer focus on Rika as she finds herself whisked into an alternate Hinamizawa following a seemingly fatal accident and coming to learn some shocking facts concerning what this world is and how she would have to correct the problem. This middle "arc" offers some solid focus on Rika's character as we come to see how she contemplates being in a world whose events differ greatly from the circumstances that led into the disturbing, dramatic and violent mess we came across with the show's characters and whether or having to choose what one she believes would be best for those she cares about. The ending is a bit of a disappointment with what we eventually learn of the whole thing, but the character focus with Rika is the best you can get for a quality plot out of this OAV. The visuals for Rei are up a notch from the two earlier TV titles as colors are more vivid and details aren't so rough with characters and scenery. This series is only for those who have seen their way through Higurashi's first two TV seasons if you craved both the comedy and drama to the franchise.
