Un-Go is a mystery series dabbling into a mix of sci-fi and the supernatural in its focus on a young man named Yuki Shinjuro tasked with solving a number of murder mysteries with his assistant Inga, who is actually a demon who consumes souls through her power to make those she targets forcefully answer a single question she asks them. The first several episodes of the series feature episodic mysteries and then move on to an ongoing plot where Yuki and Inga get caught up in a major conspiracy that involves influential politicians and a spirit with the power to cast illusions onto others to manipulate their minds. The plot in the series is a solid one as each of the mysteries actually have relevance in revealing more to the dystopian world that Japan makes up with strict laws enforced that restrict Internet rights of citizens, androids being illegal to manufacture and politicians abusing their power for personal gain through exploiting the fears people have from terrorist attacks, which were an occurrence years before the government's tightening over the rights of their people. In addition, there are some genuine twists to the second half's ongoing plot that build up thanks to the mechanics surrounding the ability of the enemy spirit that Inga and Yuki confront. The show's shortcomings mostly come from its limited focus on our two leads as we don't get to find out how they arranged their deal and connected with Koyama and Kaishou with solving mysteries, which are addressed in the prequel film released later in the year. Still if you are a fan of mystery anime with a smidge of sci-fi and the supernatural added to the mix, Un-Go is a decent offering of the genre worth checking out.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:2497#628]
(Two episodes watched):

Uh... I don't get it. For most of episode one of Un-Go, I could not think of anything good or bad to take note of regarding the show. Everything would depend on how this first case was solved, and whether the solution was interesting and plausible. It wasn't. A certain character regards the victim as a 'hero', yet decides to kill him? Wouldn't that be kind of worse for him than the disgrace he would have faced if he had lived to face trial? And the case is solved because this Ingi person has some sort of paranormal ability to read people's minds (but only once per person, apparently)? What's the deal with that? No explanation is offered; but who gives a damn about who stabbed a guy when there's a freaky person like this present in the episode? The method used to carry out the crime was so-so. Most importantly, did the premise and the cast of characters grab my interest? Not so far. So, that's about all I can say about Un-Go so far; if every episode is like this one, I will skip it, but I am hoping for some answers in episode two (actually, this one seemed to be numbered as episode '0'). The preview made me wonder if this is a collection of one-episode stories which have nothing in common, but apparently not.

Still no explanation of Ingi whatsoever! That was the frustrating thought that summarized episode two for me. Apparently we're supposed to be entertained by modest mysteries while a major one is shoved in our faces but left unsolved. Anybody can be a brilliant detective if you've secretly got a mind reader working for you. And I detect no sign that Ingi ever will be explained. This show almost feels like a second season, in that the makers assume that we are already familiar with the characters and don't need much introduction to anybody. We don't get to know anybody, not even Mr. 'Defeated Detective', and thus cannot care a whole lot what happens. And the solution to the second murder was confusing and uninteresting. I think I will quit watching Un-Go.
