Tree of Palme is treated kind of like an anime take on the fairy tale Pinocchio with the puppet Palme going on a journey to know what it is like being human and hopefully becoming one himself when a mysterious woman presses him on a journey to deliver something for her. However, this take on it is quite dark as Palme's creator is killed off early in the movie, he comes across a town where child slavery is the norm in it and encounters a gang of children thieves who were escaped slaves abducted into the town. In terms of mood and visuals, Tree of Palme does a good job at setting both elements up. The movie makes use of dark and subdued colors for its visuals to depict the somewhat gloomy world that Palme and other characters live in with subtle and intense musical tracks to accompany the movie's dramatic moments. Despite the somewhat simple character designs, Tree of Palme's settings do have a good amount of detail and there is consistent fluid movement throughout this movie with vehicles, battles and other forms of destruction that occur throughout this movie.

However in terms of plotting, Tree of Palme is quite a mess. There are multiple plot developments that the movie is trying to tackle which include Palme's journey, the intentions of the mysterious men chasing him, and who the mysterious woman was that led Palme on said journey. However, two hours just isn't enough to cram in too many plot developments as this leads to characters not getting their depth, some awkward moments of transition in the plot, changes in the mood of characters that come out of nowhere, and elements of the world of the movie that are either not getting too deeply explored or appearing out of thin air just for convenience to the plot. These issues make the narrative of the movie quite a mess at points as it left me caring less about the characters if they aren't too fleshed out or there is no apparent reason for their mood changing. Making this movie a TV or OAV series could have given it more time to properly develop its world and characters.

As it is, A Tree of Palme is decent enough if only for its visual and aural presentation, as well as the mood it gives off. However get past these elements and you are left with a movie that just tries to do too much in the limited amount of time it was running in.
