I'm quite surprised that given the rep of Studio Ghibli films that no one on Mikomi has ever made a section for nor reviewed this fun little Ghibli title. Running in a style similar to Azumanga Daioh and Minami-ke, My Neighbors the Yamadas is a collection of vignettes that explore the everyday activities of members of the Yamada family. The Yamadas make for a lovable bunch of characters for how down-to-earth they are and how they respond to the actions of those within their household. From Takashi and Matsuko getting into their little silly arguments to Noboru often feeling exasperated with the adults acting up to the family forgetting about Nonoko at the mall, the Yamadas behave like a normal family that many could connect to the developments they face, whether heartwarming or silly. Be warned though that like the two mentioned titles that My Neighbors the Yamadas run under, this movie can be an acquired taste due to its mundane feel and lacking an ongoing plot compared to other Studio Ghibli films.

The visual quality to the movie is noticeably below par from what you would expect from regular Ghibli films as settings and character designs were designed in quite a simple style which it appeared Ghibli intentionally did to emulate the design style used for the manga series. At points though, the movie does display some moments of fluid animation during fantasy scenes or moments where the family was on the road. But because much of the animation in the movie is minimum at best, I do have to give a lower score for Animation.

Still, I'm quite glad to finally have the opportunity of seeing this movie as I enjoyed seeing the comical moments involving the Yamada family. If you enjoyed watching Azumanga Daioh and Minami-ke, then I imagine you would get similar enjoyment out of seeing My Neighbors the Yamadas.
