One of three (short) OVA episodes released in the Spring of 2010. (see details below)

OVA 1 (~16min) - see The Blind Alchemist

OVA 2 (~13min) - see Simple People

OVA 3 (~14min) Tales of the Master - An 18-year-old Izumi Harnet sets out for Mount Brigs to train under the legendary alchemist, Silver Steiner. This side story sheds light on some of the difficulties and hardships that the Elric brother's master had to endure during her youth.

The first Blu-ray Disc and DVD volume for the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood anime series will include a Mōmoku no Renkinjutshi (Blind Alchemist) OVA when Aniplex ships it on August 26. The OVA is based on the side story of the same name that manga creator Hiromu Arakawa drew for the Fullmetal Alchemist Guidebook. The first Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood disc release will also feature the first two episodes from the television series. The Limited Initial Edition will add "Hiromu Arakawa's 4-Panel Theater," which will be the first time that Arakawa's four-panel gag manga have been animated. The other extras will include an "Eye Catch Card" illustrated with the commercial bumper artwork from the anime and a 16-page Alchemist's Log about the behind-the-scenes production. Hiroki Kanno is drawing the disc jacket illustrations. Arakawa herself will illustrate a "Rouge" box for the first four volumes.
[edit] Animated adaptations of the popular manga series by the same name. See ↗Fullmetal Alchemist for more info.

I rather enjoy these little one-off stories from the main Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood story, especially since they were too part of the manga (though published in different places). Obviously, these would be difficult to have in the main story as they would interrupt the flow. That said, having them in the OVA's (which I'm told match how the manga treated these stories -- as extras) works well for me.

This time out is Izumi and I found it interesting to see where she obtained her own "one is all, all is one" method for initially training Ed and Al on that island. While we don't know who trained Izumi on alchemy, clearly the lessons learned on Briggs (which her adventures had been eluded to in the regular series) aided her in her alchemy studies. However, it also explains why she is a good fighter and how she was able to throw Sloth in episode 55 of Brotherhood.

Finally, for those wondering about the Romaji title and why I have "sensei" in parenthesis. The Kanji "師匠" is for the term "Shishou," which means "master" or "teacher." However, the Furigana in the episode spells out the word "Sensei," which also means the same thing. I'm guessing that since Ed and Al call Izumi "Sensei," that was spelled out above the word "Shishou." However, "Shishou" is an honorific usually used for martial arts instructors.

Bottom line: Another fun but short FMA OVA. ^_^
