Is this really a new, 2009 series? That was the thought which was going through my head as I watched the opening of Tentai Senshi Sunred 2. It is such a parody of mecha/Power Rangers stuff that even the OP sequence is meant to look old (it was hilarious). TSS2 was the biggest surprise of the season for me--a totally novel approach to anime comedy. Its wild and unorthodox sense of humor is a breath of fresh air. I quickly decided that I'd be watching this one for sure. First, however, I needed to watch season one. I would describe TSS and TSS2 as a look at what a superhero vs. supervillain scenario would likely degrade to if it was actually posed in a modern-day Japanese city. The bad guys (like "Combat Goon no. 1") are halfhearted and pathetic, while the good guys--mainly Red himself--are not exactly paragons of virtue and have better things to do with their time than fight them. Perhaps the basic premise of the hilarity in this show is that people accept bizarre, man-sized monsters as fellow citizens without a second look. This leads to absurdly funny situations such as the neighborhood meeting in which Red is criticised for his careless disposal of garbage while the villains are praised for their disciplined approach to the same. You know that comic brilliance is at work when the situation itself summons laughter without any particular punchline. I cannot praise Sunred and Sunred 2 highly enough. My favorite line (so far): "Stop it, P-chan, this is an important document" --General Vamp Last updated Friday, January 29 2010. Created Sunday, October 11 2009. |
