A short film that is great for animation enthusiasts to have a look at, Tsukimi no Ie tells a fairly simple story in its 10-plus minute run of an old man reliving memories scuba-diving through the flooded floors of his home. The presentation to Tsukimi no Ie does well to reflect the movie's tranquil and nostalgic mood with subdued color tones and taking on a Western animation style that sets it apart from conventional Japanese animated works. Animation is rather choppy yet gives the movie the feel of a storybook being brought to life. While the music is rather low-key, the use of piano and stringed instruments are effective at conveying the pain of experiencing past memories that the old man goes through. This is definitely a title of interest for older animation fans as they could certainly connect with the message being conveyed through Tsukimi no Ie.

A Traveller's Diary, this artistic 12-min adventure is purely reflective. An old man living in a box home on the surface of a lake(?) dons a scuba suit to dive into his basement to recover his pipe, or more correctly, remember the fond memories of his youth. Intended to be a thoughtful and spiritually provocative piece, this tranquil, sedate and wordless story is certain to appeal to the older anime crowd. Last updated Thursday, July 02 2009.
