This was a fun spy-action title. 009-1 appears to be an adaptation of the late 1960s manga series and it shows through the old-fashioned character designs which appear to be designed as a homage of sorts. This series runs with the traditional elements of the spy-action genre which still work quite well for a modern viewer such as myself: seductive charm, hidden gadgets, disguises, rivalries between professionals, infiltrations, code names. Mylene Hoffman as agent 009-1 is smart and sexy in her various missions without behaving and appearing like a hooker as a good number of female characters are in modern action or ecchi titles donning similar "features" as her. Even though the series is mostly episodic in exploring Mylene's missions and the tensions between West and East Blocs, the characters in each episode are fleshed out enough where you understand their motivations and backgrounds. There is even an episode in the series that reveals details on Mylene's past, which comes as a rather tragic one and you come to understand why she occasionally shows remorse to others in her missions. If you are a fan of older anime/ manga titles, then you can't go wrong with checking out 009-1.

What a change from 009 and the other 'cyborg' shows. It's L/R with Ecchi. So far it's pretty good.

An excellent futuristic spy-action series. Super-sexy cybernetic female agents who make James Bond look like an amateur fight against the agents of the Eastern Bloc. 009-1 takes the best parts of Ghost in the Shell and Lupin III, but leaves out the boring parts of GitS and the crappy animation of Lupin, replacing them with sexy action and brilliant visuals. There's a lot of brutal, yet smooth, violence as the girls of Western Bloc's elite "Zero Zero" intelligence organization take care of their enemies. Music is by Taku Iwasaki, who also did the musics for Kenshin OVA and ROD TV.

009-1 is easily the best new series of 2006/2007. Too bad it is not easily available on fansub, but luckily ADV Films are about to release the series on DVD in the US. There are 12 TV-episodes in the series, plus one extra episode released on DVD only in Japan (to be included on ADV's 3rd and last DVD also).
