Thanks to Jan-chan for pointing this one out to me--I had never heard of The Samurai even though it has been around for a long time and has even been R1 licensed. The first thing to catch my eye was some pretty nice background artwork for a twenty-odd year old show. This OVA had a definite 80-ish feel to it. The weird, quirky characters (inspired by Ranma 1/2, maybe?) were fun, though I never did make complete sense of just what phobia everyone suffered from (what was the effect that handkerchief had, and why?). The slapstick comedy was largely predictable yet funny nevertheless--I was LOLing several times. It struck me as simple comedy, but simple comedy done right. Ninja grandmothers must be a stereotype in Japan, because the one in this show looked just like the one that would reappear in Devil Hunter Yohko. I see the first steps towards the perverted female teacher, too. I was thinking this was either the first episode of a TV series or the first episode of a series of several OVAs, but as it extended beyond 23 minutes I gradually realized this was a one-of-a-kind OVA. That's a pity, but not a major one; an all-new program, which doesn't demand much of my time, is generally good for a change--I wish there were more of them.

This is one very silly and naughty short story! If you found any humor in Labyrinth Of Flames with it's excessive amounts of fanservice, nudity and strangeness, then you would enjoy this one too. |
The samurai kid, Takeshi treasures a sword that was given to him by his now dead father, but his father had originally won the sword from the father of the ninja girls, Akari and Kagiri and they are intent on getting it back. Kagiri is an easy-going sex-crazed nudist, while her twin sister is boy-phobic and becomes extremely violent when she is even touched by a boy. But Takeshi also some serious problems of his own (and lets not talk about his older sister!).
Their conflict quickly ends up in a strange high school battle-royal of the weird and dysfunctional perverts.
While this series dates back to 1987, the quality of animation is really quite good, especially when compared to other series released at that time (such as Kimagure Orange Road (TV) or City Hunter.)
I posted some snaps in the episode details section.
