While it doesn't really answer every question of Saishu Heiki Kanojo, this sequel does give you a sense of things from the military's perspective with Mizuki. She is given a solid amount of character depth as you get to know what led her to be the prototype weapon and changes in her character as she realizes the hardships of Chise's new system on her emotional state. Mizuki makes for a good contrast to Chise's desire to maintain normalcy in her life whereas Mizuki's character has been devoted to military combat. Some of the plot holes from the series are answered such as why the JSDF chose Chise as the final weapon. But the reasons behind the war are still unclear in this OAV.

This OAV features a brighter color palette and makes use of CG animation during scenes of Mizuki and Chise's weapon transformations and battle scenes. The scenes where these are present are a sight to behold. However, the TV show's habit of having the characters appear to be blushing when they are not is still present in this OAV. The OAV also retains the dramatic musical pieces of the TV show.

It won't give you all you want if you watched the TV series. But, Saikano: Another Love Story makes for a solid watch for fans of the series who wanted answers to some of the show's plot holes and introducing a new character to explore.

It's hard to express my feelings about this anime. The Saishu Heiki Kanojo series was fascinating but left an annoying number of questions unresolved, so I was never sure whether I should praise or bash it; this OVA doesn't exactly provide the answers I was waiting for either. Yet it is interesting. This is somehow like the Director's Cut episodes for Shin Seiki Evangelion - you'll get more information about what you already guessed. Note that Shuu-chan has no appearance at all in these two episodes.

While adding not much to the series story this OVA introduces an important new Character (a second "ultimate weapon" with a touching story of her own) whose interaction with Chise becomes quite important for the course of events, making me give very good ratings for Characters and Episode Story. You get some additional background information for Tetsu (the infantry officer), and some parts of the original story are now shown from the perspective of the JSDF, thus filling up some of the holes in the original Series Story.
Art and Animation are hardly different from the original but I liked the soft and depressing Music.

While watching this anime wouldn't make sense if you don't know the series, you should at least watch this OVA once if you liked the series already. Just don't expect it to be a sequel, which it isn't - you would be disappointed if you expect important new revelations.
