This was somewhat disappointing. It appeared this OVA series for Fushigi Yugi would be a more mature take with Tamahome whisked back into the world of the book and Miaka trying to make sense of what was going on. Unfortunately, three OVA episodes just aren't enough to slowly build up and explore what is going on as the final episode crams all the revelations into it, killing much of the suspense and drama that this could have potentially brought to the series. This is quite a shame as the animation for the OVA series is quite improved over the TV anime with better detailed character designs and not looking as cheap on the backgrounds. Otherwise unless you're a sap for all things Fushigi Yugi, this is only worth a single watch to continue advancing through the franchise's plot.

Whyyyyy!!!!
It DOES start off good. Same old characters, only slightly more mature. A good deal of mysterious events occur and once again, the bridge between our world and the Universe of the Four Gods has reopened. Someone is using Miaka and her friends as pawns in the-
...okay, the "plot" goes downhill from here!
The first two episodes, you're fooled into thinking that it's gonna be a deep-plotted, action-packed continuation of the much-beloved TV series. But nooooo! The last episode tries to cram so much story in it that its ridiculous. Come on, 10+ good guys versus one bad guy? Oooh, I wonder who'll win THAT one.
The most noteworthy things in this OAV are the absolutely hilarious bloopers at the end of each episode. It still crack's me up to think of the seishi using the bodies Seiryuu twins as instant messaging devices...
If you're not an FY fan to begin with, don't watch this; or watch FY first and then watch this. If you are an FY fan, then watch it. If only to see the beloved characters once again.
And the bloopers, the bloopers! Poor Sub and Ami...heehee!

God did I love the television series of FUSHIGI YUUGI, I thought it was a show that had a lot of heart and a rather unique premiseimagine my disappointment when I watched this mockery of an ending.
First off, it was way too short for the story they were trying to tell (hes supposed to be THE VILLAIN of FY and hes killed off in moments?) and it overall seems like they were just trying to do something to fend off the rabid fans of the series. Basically they recycled most of the plot from the series and just condensed it into a 3 episode mockery that fans would be agitated with after watching. There was no closure at the ending as it is confusing and depressing for people who loved pretty much everything the show was about.
The only reason I can find to watch this is for people who are looking for any reason to see their favorite characters back on the screen. Also, for those who decide to get the DVD version, the Omake (Extra) footage where theyre making fun of the characters and some of the other run-on jokes and themes of the show is pretty damn funny. Watch this, but I wouldnt recommend much else if you loved the series.

This was pretty terrible in comparison to Fushigi Yuugi. The only positives are better animation (purely cosmetic) and decent music. Truly frustrating. Nothing is explained. It's all a whirlwind stuffed into three episodes. I myself am not sure what the heck went on in this first series, or what was even the point of it. This is probably one of those things that you will have to watch over and over again just to just to try to understand, and even then you're gonna need a friend's help or something to piece this mess together. I am still debating whether or not to watch again and try to figure it all out, or just forget about it and pray it is erased from my memory.
If you're a Fushigi Yuugi fan you're probably going to watch this anyway. But please, listen to the rumors. It really sucks. If you like the ending of the TV show, don't watch this at all. It really ruins the whole story. They really screw with the characters and they just become straight out annoying, like Miaka and Tamahome for example.
This series lacks everything that made the TV series shine. At least in this one Tamahome is Tamahome, as for the second series...that is a whole other story /slash/ problem.

I did NOT like this one! They scrowed with ALL the characters(they really scrowed with Tasuki...grrrrr), and the one thing they kept the same was the nodity! They really went weird with Toka/Tomahome, it wasn't like the kind of wierd were you have to think stuff out like Lain, no it was just really off the deep end! The only part I liked was the epasode with Chinchiri! And even that had some inconsestoncys with the first story he told in the T.V. series! I would avoid this if not for the nodity, for the screwed up thinking that went into this, If you are going to see it, only watch eposode 6, that is I think the one with Chinchri!

well this is myserious play so you better go in expecting them to screw with tomahome and miaka and they do unfortuanatly for them they only have a few short episodes to do it so insted of the roller coster ride of the tv series this is more like ruff turbualce in an air plane to many ups and downs in a short period to do more than shake things up a little bit this one wont tug on your heart strings like the series did but the one episode centered around my favorite caracter chichri made it worth while for me

Rather boring with a bad storyline... Compared to the other Fushigi Yuugi series, (which I usually rated buy) this one came short of being rated "avoid". The only good things were the hillarious "Bus Trip", the animation, Nakago, and the music. But the storyline was very lacking and it was not very appealing to me. If you can borrow it from a friend or watch it on the internet somewhere, do so; but I strongly suggest not to buy this OVA unless you have a lot of money to spend.

Watch 7 8 5 7 2 2 Anonymous #51 [series:110#51]
The only reason my review says 'watch' and not 'avoid' is due to the hilarious Bus Trip sketches at the end of each episode. Hilarious, reminiscent of the first few episodes of the TV series/manga, and very witty, these little sketches amuse to the extreme.
Unfortunately, the rest of the OAVs themselves are horrible, and any minimal degree of quality injected by Watase Yuu at this point vanished due to her exclusion from the creative process in them. Since these OAVs are in no way based off of the manga and have almost nothing to do with them, I see little reason for anyone to have to be subjected to them.
However, do listen for some good music from some of the seishi's seiyuu, and check out the Bus Trip. That's about all that's good about the OAV I.

Buy Jenn-chan [series:110#31]
This story is not part of the Fushigi Yuugi manga, but more of an explanation as to how things got to be the way they are in the 2nd OVA. Since the manga goes from the end of the TV series storyline right to the 2nd OVA storyline, this OVA was created to tie them together. The artwork and animation is better than ever, and the music is just as great. The only drawback to this part of the FY saga is how confusing it is. I had to watch it a couple times to get what was going on, and even then I still had to ask people what happened. You just might be able to skip this OVA and go right to the 2nd, but I don't recommend it.
