There appears to be a new and very popular trend of releasing OVA episodes bundled with new release manga titles. These types of episodes are probably a type of OVA ... but should we consider creating a new category to more properly reflect these types of offerings?

If so, could we perhaps flag/tag them as being an OAD (original anime on DVD) offering?

How different is bundled manga anime from straight OVA offerings? I don't think that one can buy these bundled titles separately as standalone titles, so they ARE DEFINITELY different from traditional OVA titles.... but just how different are they?

What are your thoughts?

From what I read, the "OAD" manga bundles tend to be lost episodes from the original series. That is to say, episodes that they couldn't air like in Kamen no Maid Guy OVA or alternate story tellings like in Da Capo If for instance. Most regular OVAs fall under quick sequel episodes or the "alternate universe" story tellings but they tend to be stand alone episodes (no DVD bundle), like in Clannad Mouhitosu no Sekai Tomoyo Hen for example.

All in all, "OAD" has enough reason to be seperate from the OVA keyword but may take a while until we have a healthy supply of titles for it. Right now (might be some older ones, i'm not sure) I only see like 4 titles for OAD. I say the keyword will be needed later anyway so i'm all for it.

To Love-Ru OVA
new Tsubasa episodes for Feb '09 (see ANN notice)

and then there are the 3 titles that you mentioned.

Clannad OVA was a DVD bundle? Oh well, that looks look plenty titles to me. Wait to see what the rest of the gang thinks but I know you'll get the green light. Looks like a new keyword is about to be born. LOL

The only difference between an OAD and and OAV/OVA on DVD is -- you have to buy a manga too. From the business perspective, they are forcing otaku to buy a manga and an OVA at the same time. Rumor has it that the otaku in Japan aren't happy with this bundling effort. Sales so far seem pretty good for OAD's but there's also a rumor that there may not be any OAD's done after 2010. Who knows how accurate that is though.

As for the new category, that's fine. Technically, they are OVA's even if they aren't being called that.

OAD is a new term so I agree that someone should make it.

We now have OVA ONA OAD

To Love Ru will release 3 episodes on a OAD

After some deliberation ... I think that it might be best to create a new CATEGORY/KEYWORD (such as Series in a Series, which might read might read Anime sold with Manga as an OVA keyword flag.

Thoughts?....

I think this would be a better idea than adding "OAD" as another keyword, since the difference between OVA and OAD is so small (and hardly anyone here will actually get them by buying the manga, since it seems that they tend to be fansubbed anyway).
