I was curious at seeing what the original Armitage III OAV series was like after getting enjoyment out of the Dual Matrix movie. And like the movie, Armitage III did well at meeting my expectations. The characters of Ross and Naomi were quite different from the ones I seen in Dual Matrix which reflects on how they were before meeting one another. Naomi has a more rougher attitude that she puts on against the murderers of the "third robots", but also has her vulnerable side shown through her uncertainty of wanting a relationship with a human and her origins. Ross shows a hatred for robots due to a past tragedy and has to come to terms with the fact his body isn't entirely human now since gaining robotic limbs. The chemistry between Ross and Naomi is the highlight of this OAV as their bond improves as the series progresses where each character comes to terms with how to view their situations. Their relationship development felt natural enough and didn't seem forced at all. The world of Armitage III where robots and humans co-exist with one another is nothing new for me to see in an anime title. But looking through the mindsets of Naomi and Ross as they try understanding what they are or have become offers a good amount of character depth in this series. Visuals had a good amount of detail and made use of faded colors that do well to complement the mood of this series, though character lining looked a bit rough. Music did well to show off the gritty attitude and mood of Armitage III, especially the techno music OP featuring Armitage showing off her attitude throughout the sequence. Armitage III is a cyberpunk anime that offers a good mix of romance, action, attitude, drama and character depth. It's well worth the time and money to watch if you are ever able to find the series anywhere online since Geneon's no longer around and this series has since been out-of-print. A preview on another Pioneer tape got me interested in Armitage III. It was little more than a replay of the extremely "punky" opening sequence, which was intriguing (I wish the theme song lasted longer than it did). I noticed the screenplay was by Chiaki Konaka--that's a name that has been turning up often in the anime I've been watching lately (Big O, for example). "This is weird!" I said to myself as I watched. A nice touch of wackiness, a plot which makes sense yet is fairly unpredictable, and best of all, Armitage's sassy personality. Some minor problems included the animation sometimes seeming a bit "off" somehow--not enough frames, perhaps? The movement of character's mouths sometimes didn't seem to match the dialogue (and I was watching the subtitled version). Something about the character designs seemed odd; but come to think of it, maybe what was unusual was that they were drawn in a realistic style whereas I've gotten used to enormous eyes, microscopic noses, etc. To be honest, I probably wouldn't have understood a fair part of the plot on the first viewing if I hadn't read several synopses (synopsii?) beforehand. Whether the story could have been told a little better, or I need to be a little brighter, is up for debate. The final shootout seemed kind of superfluous--is Armitage totally indestructible? But the ending was nice; the suggestion that they go visit Julian makes you wonder about questions like "what does it mean to be alive?" (as do a number of other incidents in the series). In short, the parts of the show might have flowed more smoothly, and grabbed me emotionally to a greater extent, but I didn't really expect all that much beforehand, and was pleasantly surprised at what I got. I really like Armitage III because I really loved the character Armitage! She's my favorite type of female heroine -- strong but still a woman. I got a kick out of a line in one of the episodes where a character stated he wanted to ask her creator "...why he would create a robot that could kick ass and raise children." From the start, there was good chemestry between Ross and Armitage and they made a good partners on the police force. Good characters help a title a whole lot. The story won't win any awards, but it is interesting. The subject matter of robots in human society has been done several times in anime. But this was interesting in that there were cyborgs (humans with robot body parts), androids (robot servants with human appearance but clearly not human), and these "third types" who easily passed as human. So we get a look at racism, and it was interesting that the dark-skinned Ross would feel so negatively about robotic types and this is made more interesting by the fact that he has a robotic leg after losing his from a cyborg attack. But more than this, the roles of humans and robotic-types as well as men and women are looked at. Should women be more like men? Should men be more like women? Or should we accept who we are and not try to be what we are not? Can humans and human-acting robots love each other? Interesting questions, ne? The romance between Ross and Armitage was a nice touch. It wasn't over mushy nor was it forced. As Ross began to see things in a new light, his actions become more than those of a man protecting his work partner. They began to take on that of a man protecting a woman he loves and wants to be partnered with for life. Armitage took great steps in trusting (then falling for) a man who'd previously stated how much he hated robotic types. It was nicely done. So we have a good story and good characters. The art and animation are pretty good too. Actually, they get better with each OAV episode. The music contains a lot of cyberpunk styles. In fact the opening reminded me of titles like Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 and Divergence Eve which are more recent releases. Bottom line: Very enjoyable, entertaining, and interesting series which I will be adding to my collection. Armitage is my kind of woman. You go, girl! Last updated Tuesday, December 28 2004. Armitage has long been one of my favorite animes. The basics of the story is about a cop, Ross, who travels to Mars and meets a female officer named Naomi Armitage. They get involved in solving a murder case involving a famous country singer. Ross is calm and calculating where Naomi is quicker to act and fight. He stays cool under pressure and generally makes for one tough cop and she is from the very outset a hardcore energetic fighter. She gets the job done using her own methods and lets no one stand in her way. If you make it through this movie without a soft spot for Naomi, you need to watch it again. All in all, It's a very interesting anime that has managed to stay one of my absolute favorites for many years. It's well written, has plenty of action, and very memorable main characters. This is a great OAV, I found myself dreading the first few moments of this anime, but you slowly get interested, and find yourself unwillingly hooked. The animation is excellent, perhaps even better than Ghost In The Shell. I taped this off of Sci Fi, and enjoyed immensely. The dub is excellent. I implore you to watch this fine example of an anime.
