As I have said countless times before, the basic test of the first episode of a new anime which is not pure comedy is that it must leave the viewer with one or more questions that they really want to know the answers to. In the case of Ayaka, I'm not even sure what the questions are. Who will the enemy be? These Ara-Mitama monsters? Somehow they didn't seem to play all that large a part. Inexplicable disasters are so dime-a-dozen in anime that I didn't really care what had gone wrong on the island years ago or whether Yukito's father was still alive or not. Yukito has some personality but seems largely stereotypical: another boy with fantastic magical powers which he must learn to master and use. All sorts of crazy stuff happens, like a train apparently running on the surface of the sea, but they gave me a bad feeling rather than entrance me. I felt that too much was happening too fast, and whatever explanation we get will never catch up. How is anyone supposed to make sense of this? Some additional characters get a brief introduction at the end, but not enough of one to convince me that they will turn things around. I was left largely mystified by episode one; I don't see what is unique about this show and is supposed to hook me.
