Another OVA for Dirty Pair, this one is a bit more on the serious side compared to most earlier installments of the franchise where Yuri and Kei try to figure out the mysterious circumstances surrounding the destruction of a space flight ship and the mysterious disappearance of a scientist connected to one of the planets in the voyage of said ship. Like past installments of the franchise, the plot's mostly an excuse to feature Yuri and Kei getting in action against enemy threats which the series delivers on with the duo regularly having to deal with those involved in a conspiracy connected to both cases, though Flight 005 Conspiracy noticeably lacks much of the comedy you would find with earlier installments of the franchise. The animation here is perhaps the best within the franchise up to that point with smoother detail and less washed out colors for scenery and character designs, on top of having solid choreography and movement during action sequences. As usual, Dirty Pair fans are likely to get the most enjoyment out of this series, though some may be turned off with the very limited presence of the franchise's trademark comedy.

Yeah, I agree--it's definitely the "action" scenes that remain in my memory after watching this. People getting shot point-blank, blown to bits, sucked into space--you name it. I must admit that after watching this one twice, I still have no idea who was responsible for blowing up the spaceship. The conflicting motives and objectives of the three planetary governments of Dolz, Zahl and Dubahl are confusing, so I pretty much gave up trying to solve the case myself early on. Still, the way Kei and Yuri repeatedly thought they had the answer, only to uncover yet another layer of conspiracy, was kind of fun. A couple questions--what about the scene at the beginning of people being gunned down, presumably aboard Flight 005? Did that ever really happen? And what's with the "lets-fake-Yuri's-death trick? Kei did know she was still alive, didn't she? Did they have a special plan--"if ever a building we're in is unexpectedly blown up, whichever one of us is burried most deeply in the rubble (obviously mere bombs cannot harm us)will play dead while the other will pretend to grieve and vow revenge"? As always, I object to the "since we're the heroes/heroines we have the devil's own luck and cannot be seriously hurt" technique of scriptwriting, but what good will it ever do... Actually, the outlandish action gets amusing at times--the armed-to-the-teeth truck, Kei's mini helicopter gunship, Mughi's dead-on missile launching skills, etc. It was worth a rent. One other thing--I wish the theme song had had more than about four notes to it!

I think this was originally meant to be shown on TV but then was made into an OAV title, I'll have to check. At the very least, it is the first OAV sequel to the Dirty Pair TV series. There's really not a lot to say. There's a lot of action, and I mean a lot. There are pauses to move the story along but otherwise this thing is non-stop action. So if action is your thing and you like Dirty Pair, this will be your title. There isn't much of a story, but it does provide the means to carry the title from one action scene to the next. I do enjoy the Yuri and Kei of this series unlike Dirty Pair Flash. Here, the girls are friends and partners, even if they sometimes disagree and argue. It is the chemestry between the two that make these titles watchable. Bottom line: Fans of the classic Dirty Pair series should watch this.
