Well, if you like the Batman and Robin TV Series from the 1960s, then this series might be for you.

Steam Detectives is a story of a young detective, Narutaki, his nurse companion Ling Ling, and their steam powered (Jules-Verne-style) twenty-foot-tall robot, Goriki, and their efforts to keep Steam City safe from a bevy of caped, cloaked and masked villains. As with the Batman series, the motivating factors of villains range from the trivial to the bizarre; one villain, who is obviously an underachiever with an appliance fetish, is out to steal an antique steam powered vacuum cleaner, and proceeds to demolish an exposition hall to achieve his goals. But no matter their motivations, they all appear to be equipped with giant steam powered robots, which can only be stopped by Goriki. Each new villain that appears is required to sport a wild and outlandish costume, and the good guys wear trench coats fashionably accessorized with large colorful buttons, so that they can be easily identified by the viewer as they chase each other through the clouds of steam that perpetually shroud the Victorian era streets of Steam City.

The story line is fashionably camp and simplistic, as it was with the TV version of Batman. The plot is a series is that of detached stand alone episodes with no real character development.

I would have to give this series a two-thumbs up in the RENT rating, but I would probably have to wait for a dreary rainy day to want to have to find the seven hours that are required to watch the entire series.

If you like this type of story, then you probably should check out Giant Robo
