What are the key ingredients you need to make a movie that promotes an anime craze like Inuyasha? First, create original movie villians not canon to the storyline in an effort to give them a past connection to the characters of the series. Second, create the same type of plotline used in the series enough times to test the relationship of the possible romantic interests of the series. Third, focus heavily only on the Inu-tachi members leaving those with secondary roles like Kikyo and Sesshomaru as cameo roles just to show that "they are here." With how much I rambling, you should tell how indifferent I am with this movie much like the TV series.

The animation for the movie format is a mixed bag. On the one hand, battle scenes are more fluid and involve multiple characters instead of the one-on-one battles that take place in the series. On the other hand though, the character designs don't look as well-drawn as their TV series counterparts. You would swear that you weren't watching Inuyasha at first if you seen the character designs for this movie.

Fans of Inuyasha would want to get a glimpse of this movie just to see what it's like. Everyone else would look for something else.

The first half of the movie is a series of really long fight scenes. They're well done with some really cool moments, but it gets a little boring.
The second half is about like a two part episode of the tv show.
There are some really sweet Kagome/Inuyasha moments, but the movie is nothing impressive. If you're an Inuyasha fan, you'll enjoy this but it doesn't ever transcend the tv show--it's not even as good as some of the better episodes.

There were only two real problems with this chapter of the Inuyasha saga -- the changed artwork and the fact that Sesshoumaru only has a couple of cameo appearences. I would have liked to have seen him forced to team up with Inuyasha to defeat Menomaru but that's only a mild complaint. This is a good movie!

The movie starts with Sesshoumaru being attacked by the Chinese youkai's Ruri and Hari. He quickly defeats them and moves on. Menomaru revives them once he realizes that Sesshoumaru's sword is not the one that will break the seal placed on his father by Inuyasha's & Sesshoumaru's father. Only Inuyasha's sword will do the trick. And thus our tale really gets going.

While Kagome prepares lunch for her crew in her time, Inuyasha, Sango, Miroku, & Shippo are fighting a giant scorpion they feel sure has a Shikon shard in it. What was great about this sequence from the start was the teamwork displayed by our guys. In the series, Inuyasha seems to do most of the work with everyone throwing in a token assist from time to time (unless the episode is about them, then they obviously do more). But in this battle, everyone works! It was great to see, especially since this teamwork continues throughout the movie (when they are together). Kagome shows up and they finally defeat the monster, grab the shard, and have lunch.

The standard comedy from the series shows up in the movie with Kagome using her patented "oswari" command and Shippo doing his thing too. :-D Other comedic moments from the show all show up in the movie at various times and were a nice, welcome touch. Tanuki provides some humor as well...silly racoon!

I mentioned how teamwork plays such an important role in this movie. However, the writers have cleverly provided vehicles for Sango and Miroku to have tough individual battles to fight. Early on, Kirara (Sango's youkai pet cat) is placed under the control of Ruri and Hari. Naturally Sango wants Kirara returned and as one might expect, Miroku goes to help her. Earlier, Ruri aquired Miroku's Kazana attack and so she fights him in a one-on-one brawl. Hari fights Sango and both fights come off well. I won't say how each won their fight, but it was believable.

Meanwhile, Kagome is possessed and is being forced to kill Inuyasha the same way Kikyo sealed him 50 years earlier. She manages to resist but ends up shooting Inuyasha anyway to the same tree that Kikyo did. Upon shooting Inuyasha, she frees herself from Menomaru's possession and then is confronted by Kikyo. Kikyo forces Kagome to return to her time with the three Shikon shards "never to see Inuyasha again." Sesshoumaru shows up and asks Kikyo why she hates Kagome so much or is she testing Kagome's miko powers (which come off much stronger here than in the series). Her answer -- she hates everything and everybody. Sesshoumaru warns her that he will be the one to kill Inuyasha.

In Kagome's time, the world is being effected by what Menomaru is doing in the past. Realizing she's still connected to the past, she is able to communicate with Inuyasha via the tree and then returns to the past, clearing the blockage at the well (which is her portal between worlds) with one of her arrows. Together, the pair join up with Sango and Miroku for the final battle with Menomaru.

Teamwork comes into play again as Menomaru unleashes his hoards of yokai on the land. It takes the combined effort of Kagome and Inuyasha to defeat Menomaru for good -- something Inuyasha's father couldn't even do.

As the final credits roll by, we are treated to stills of the aftermath of everything, some comedic and some serious. The one that caught my attention was Sesshoumaru visiting the site where Inuyasha has defeated a 2nd demon their father could only seal. The look on his face said a lot.

Bottom line: Except for the new art, this movie rocked. Even if you've never seen Inuyasha before, you'll be able to watch this as in the beginning, we are provided with enough information about all the main characters and about the Shikon jewel to get you started. Well done!
