This show almost seems like a parable about disposable items, throwaway culture, and recycling. Unfortunately, the premise seems very two-dimensional: Rudo has never done anything seriously wrong and has been dealt an extremely shitty hand by life. He's an orphan, has some sort of disformity on his hands, his father is believed to be a murderer, and as a trash raider he is considered the lowest of the lower class. Plus there's what happens to Regto. Nevertheless, he still seems pretty shallow at the end of the episode; his only personality is his hope of romancing Chiwa, a brown-haired girl. He's incredibly—not credibly, really—agile and can virtually outrun a bullet. Meanwhile the upper class is arrogant, wasteful, sanctimonious, and merciless in its suppression of the Tribesfolk via the 'Apostles'. Basically, black versus white rather than shades of gray. Still, I'm a little curious about where this is going. The killer that came for Regto didn't excite me much, since there was no hint of what his motive might have been. But the way Rudo's sentence is carried out—he's dropped into yet another garbage dump, this one seemingly extending to the horizon in every direction and populated by dragon-like monsters—demands an explanation. Whether it's a good one or not will probably determine whether I continue watching this show. These monsters, it turns out, are what's known as 'trash beasts'--they are composed of garbage which somehow moves and acts together. And Enjin, a person Rudo meets in this stinking realm, assures him that they're not in a pit, they're above ground--he and the others here see Rudo's world as a black sphere drifting above them(?). They despise 'sphereites' because all they ever do is rain trash down upon them. But it turns out that Rudo is a 'Giver', someone 'who can give life to objects and draw out their power'. Enjin invites Rudo to become what's known as a 'Cleaner', presumably an organization of Givers who fight the monsters (or something like that). If it isn't obvious, I was having a hard time taking all these revelations seriously. I think a show can have a premise which is too weird, or isn't explained well enough, and thereby confuses and frustrates the viewer rather than making sense. Last updated Saturday, July 26 2025.
