Seven years ago Kamitsubaki City was devastated by an inexplicaple disaster known as 'The Blackout'. A strange green glow fell over the city and many, but not all, of its residents were reduced to Pompeii-like casts of their former selves. Kafu Morisaki lost both of her parents but was physically unharmed herself. The city has made a rapid recovery in the seven years since, thanks largely to the miraculous invention of a system that can do no less than transform human thoughts into energy. But something isn't right, because there have been increasing reports of terrifying 'tesseractors'--'distortions in this world' created from 'the fears and desires of those locked in this region'. Kafu is surprised to learn that about the only thing that has been identified as being able to purify them are the casual songs she sings.

I bet it was the screwing around with converting pure thought into pure energy which caused the Blackout in the first place. Something that weird has got to have a weird explanation. Nobody seems to know exactly how this process of utilizing 'Fragments' works, but it delivers plentiful energy which is just what is needed to rebuild (apparently the Blackout occurred all over the world, not just in Kamitsubaki City). Nevermind any possible side effects--sort of a parable on human technological development since the Industrial Revolution. It looks like Kafu will become part of a team of five singing girls, known as 'witchlings', who fight tesseractors. For some reason the five principal VAs apparently preferred to keep their identities secret and used pseudonyms in the credits (often simply their character's name). The character designs of this show could definitely be more sophisticated and animated, and I don't think colors were utilized fully. We get a taste of a fight with tesseractors and learn that they're not entirely evil (they seem to contain the remnants of the minds of those who perished during the Blackout). For some reason a large flying fish accompanies Kafu and protects her (I think); can anybody see it? The show seems to have a fairly complex plot, since I wrote down almost a page of notes and lines that might matter at some point. Or maybe it has already gotten about as complex as it ever will. I am undecided as to whether this sounds like fun, but will probably watch episode two.
