King Gray, once a feared and deadly warrior and monarch, finds himself reincarnated as infant Arthur Leywin in some alternate reality. His memories of his previous life are intact, and while he considers his child body to be a 'prison' and never smiles he quickly sets to work training himself to master the art of magic and build a new life.

(Two episodes watched):

The basic premise of this show reminded me of Mushoku Tensei, what with the protagonist reborn rather than somehow transferred to another world, and with his parents being a respected fighter and magician themselves. The main difference is that Arthur was once a King rather than a NEET. Of course Arthur finds that he has tremendous potential to employ magic--when does that not happen in Isekai anime? We get the basic rules of magic (which did not exist in Arthur's previous life), like how only around one in a hundred people possess the largely inherited ability to control mana (Arthur does) and there are basically two types of magic, that for augmenting and for conjuring. Before episode one is over Arthur amazes his parents with his latent magical abilities--largely trashing their house is a small price to pay to have a potential genius magician as their offspring. The ANN synopsis implied that Arthur might gradually discover why he was granted another life rather than it just being a done deal as is usually the case. Other than that, not much novel here, but I suppose I will keep watching for now.

After 4 year old Arthur displays tremendous potential for magic (to put it mildly) his parents decide to take him to the city of Xyrus for expert training in the subject. They are escorted by their old friends of their adventuring party, which consists of a mix of augmenters and conjurers--I am guessing that both types of magic were included so that Arthur can master both of them and thereby demonstrate yet again how awesome he is. Along the way they are attacked first by big wolves then by bandits. I'm sorry, but bandit gangs are not willing to sacrifice a dozen or so of their members just to make a routine heist. If real bandits saw that there were half a dozen expert fighters protecting their intended target, they would back off. As a result of playing fast and loose with reality, this show is hard to take seriously and, again, I don't detect anything particularly novel about it. Arthur realizes something about someone that as King Gray he once had executed, but it didn't seem to be all that moving or intriguing a lesson to me. As a result I think I will drop this show. I sort of wish it had been about Arthur's exploits as King Gray rather than yet another generic Isekai series.
