Teruaki Nakamura has moved to Okinawa from Tokyo and gotten a new girlfriend, the cheerful Hina Kyan. One problem: he can barely understand a word she says. Kyan speaks in uchinaaguchi, the traditional Okinawan langauge from before the island became part of Japan. Kyan's friend Kana Higa acts as their interpreter, but not out of pure charity.

(One episode watched):

This show sort of reminded me of the one about a guy who moves to Osaka and learns how people there think differently than in Tokyo. Except I recall that that one was amusing and I watched it to completion, whereas some trivia about life in Okinawa seems to be about all this one has to offer. We learn that 'Higa' is an extremely common name in Okinawa, and that it is common to refer to people by their first names since so many have the same last ones. And how it is believed that being taken by surprise is liable to cause your mabui (soul) to fall out of your body. Interesting, but not exactly hilarious. And how did Nakamura manage to fall in love with a girl who basically speaks a foreign language? It turns out that the reason Kana makes herself handy to translate for them is because she likes Nakamura too but is too timid to admit it. The artwork was colorful and the trivia was informative, but it is unlikely that I will be visiting Okinawa at any point in the forseeable future.
