Well, the first thing to catch my eye about TG was the unusual style of character designs--much more detailed than most but somehow slightly odd. The basic characters seemed likable enough; Gaku is a skilled programmer who gets no respect and no job because he is shy and awkward. This leads him to ally himself to the brash, supremely self-confident Haru. I didn't completely understand the logic that made Haru set out on this 'Trillion Game', however. Maybe the 'logic' is just that he really is extremely selfish, but if that were the case why did he once risk his life to help Gaku? The third most important character will seemingly be Kirika, the daughter of the president of Dragon Bank, who holds a high position there but fully deserves it. It was fun to listen to the conclusions she drew during job interviews, including those of Haru and Gaku. She mentions that she considers the company to be 'sluggish' and in need of a shakeup. Gaku is rejected despite his talent since he doesn't seem confident (Kirika voted in his favor, though) while Haru is hired even though Kirika suspects everything he said was a lie. I guess the biggest question behind this show is whether we will be able to believe that Haru's scheme could concievably succeed. So far it seems that the author has done his/her homework and the unusual things that the characters do really are possible. So, Trillion Game has passed its first test: I'll be watching episode two. In episode two Haru and Gaku start organizing their startup business. What will it do? That will be decided later. For now what's needed is money, and Haru goes around to various wealthy people trying to talk them into investing. Most refuse to touch this suspicious company with a ten-foot pole, but Kirika finds it--or the two men behind it--interesting. She provides plenty of money on the condition that she won't be just an investor, no, Haru in particular (who boasted that he would 'make you mine') will be working for her. I found the episode to be amusing and nothing so ridiculous that I could not take it seriously has happened, which was my greatest fear. The maker(s) seem to have done their homework and the story seems more-or-less plausible so far. Kirika will provide around one million dollars as long as she owns 51% of the shares in Haru and Gaku's new company, which would basically make her their boss. It seems that what she really wants is dynamic guys like them within Dragon Bank to shake things up; perhaps she figures that once their startup flops, they'll be deep in her debt and unable to say no. To draw attention to themselves, Haru and Gaku enter a prestigious computer security/hacking competition that Dragon Bank holds. Gaku is able to perform credibly but cannot possibly win until it turns out that what had seemed like a frivolous waste of time by Haru was in fact a shrewd attempt to recruit talent to assist. Again, this seems like stuff that could conceivably happen in real life, which makes it a good deal funnier. Gaku manages to make it through the preliminary stage and win himself a place in the final competition. Haru makes a bet with Kirika regarding what the loser will do for the winner. Kedoin, a chain smoking, flamboyantly dressing investor takes notice of Haru and Gaku. The tricks that were used to win the final round didn't make much sense. Haru is supposedly completely computer ignorant, yet he conducted some complex computer espionage before the contest? Not likely. And something he did during his act as a Shinto priest was clearly sabotage and a violation of the rules. Sure enough, Kirika's aide protests and their win is overturned. He is infuriated that she seems somehow entranced by them. But Kedoin is convinced to make a boatload of money available to Haru and Gaku. They begin searching for talent, even though they have yet to decide what their startup company will do. I found this to be modestly interesting and amusing. Last updated Friday, December 27 2024.
