I have gotten lazy lately and haven't checked out all new anime each season. So, the season was halfway over before I watched episode one of Dandadan, which I had noticed had gotten high ratings at ANN. The bizarre OP sequence did not appeal to me, but fortunately the remainder of the episode was much easier to make sense of and was fun. I started watching on a whim, and took no notes, but I enjoyed the episode and watched it to the end even tough I had originally figured I would probably only watch five minutes or so. I had had no idea what the story would be about but was amused and intrigued by this crazy show which sort of reminded me of FLCL. Ken winds up with a curse placed on him by the ghost 'Turbo Granny' and has lost something very important to a teenage boy, while Momo has no doubts whatsoever that aliens are real, given what they tried to do to her. Surely they will cooperate to try to lift Ken's curse or something like that. Other than that, I had no idea where this story might go, but eagerly downloaded all remaining available episodes the next day. I just hope it doesn't become so outlandish that I cannot keep track of what's going on without taking laborious notes. Episode two wasn't as much fun, however. It was basically an episode-long fight with a strange 'Plankwoods' alien (IIRC), which is based on some Roswell-like tale from the US. This thing is made of wood yet has come from outer space? And can summon a stone wall out of thin air? And an occult talisman is just the ticket to beat it? I hope each episode isn't like this, a fight-of-the-week with assorted aliens and ghosts. Neither have ever really intrigued me, and the more action an anime has the less character development and plot are likely to happen. In episode three we meet Momo's grandmother, a psychic (though she is generally scoffed at by the public) and expert in the occult. It's hard to tell what's going on and who has the upper hand when dealing with the spiritual world, and that confuses and frustrates me. I find Turbo Granny to be very annoying and I hope she will be dispensed with soon rather than be a running element of the show all the way to the climax. This show seems to be popular but it doesn't appeal to me all that much and I think I will probably drop it. Last updated Tuesday, November 26 2024. Created Friday, November 15 2024. |
