So, the basic joke behind this action comedy is that the leader of one of the most esteemed Treasure Hunting parties is actually average at best and would like nothing better than to quit but is under great pressure to carry on. But I cannot believe that anyone could hide such mediocrity for so long and reach such a high position completely by accident (and the simple-mindedness of his otherwise formidable comrades). Krai mentions that he has never even fought any sort of duel with anyone. What did he do to build the tremendous admiration that the other Grievers feel for him? It makes no sense, and a joke which makes no sense is not funny. Basically, when this anime revealed that it was going to be largely comedy it fell flat with me. It simply isn't very funny; I can't remember a single joke that made me do anything more than smile (if I even did that). Why did Krai stand in line with the other lowly applicants at the audition? It looks like he will use the unearned power he holds to manipulate people in order to serve his own interests, but that doesn't seem very funny to me either. Apparently Tino, a fighting girl who is an apprentice of one of the original members, will be the second major charater along with Krai (who she worships). I did feel a bit of interest when Krai sends Tino and three other aspiring Hunters on a 'chore' mission which will apparently turn out to be somewhat more difficult and dangerous than Krai had assumed. But I was left undecided about whether I would even watch a second episode of this show. Eventually I did, and after thinking about the situation, the best explanation I can give for my lack of interest is that this show is largely meant to be a comedy, but it is not funny at all. I don't think I even smiled once during episode two. Humor happens when things you weren't expecting happen, but you realize that they still make sense in an unexpected way. Krai taking off in some crazy flying machine was unexpected, and him wanting to catch up to Tino's party makes sense, but not in an unexpected way. It all just feels tiresome and I'd rather go do something else. Last updated Wednesday, January 01 2025. Created Friday, October 04 2024. |
