Takumi Miyasaka responds to an ad that says a place known as Astro Lodge is hiring a chef. He finds there has been something of a misunderstanding--Astro Lodge is a modest boarding house, not a restaraunt. But the tenants are appalled by the terrible cooking landlord Mira Gotokuji provides them, and Takumi finds her to be enchantingly beautiful. When they point out that she is single and has no boyfriend, he accepts the job. When he overhears a conversation he mistakenly draws the conclusion that Mira is a widow, which dashes his hopes. But the truth is even stranger: Mira in fact is a Princess from the planet Wid.

(Two episodes watched):

This show quickly reminded me of the classic anime Maison Ikkoku, what with the guy who moves into a boarding house run by a single woman who may be a widow and the eccentric tenants. Problem is, it wasn't nearly as good as I remember Maison Ikkoku being. Whereas that 1986 title took off running (and I remember being surprised at how easily it intrigued me), here The jokes were weak and I found several characters to be annoying. The characters had much more life to them in MI. The only thing which might save it would be the science fiction angle and the plot. While I was not impressed by the half-hearted imitation within this show, by the time it was over I had become modestly curious about this alien Princess business and willing to watch some more to see if it pans out. I decided that I would download one more episode (though two were available) and give this show a second chance. But I can't help thinking that what I ought to be doing is searching for DVDs of Maison Ikkoku and rewatching it.

In episode two we learn more about the priceless key that Mira and her thinking dog assistant Naosuke (I think) are looking for. It seems that she is also trying to run away from an arranged marriage or something like that, and her fiancee, Shion, shows up at the end of the episode. But it's hard to be intrigued by the plot of a show if the principal characters don't seem interesting to you, and neither Takumi nor Mira do. Takumi just wants a girlfriend at all costs, and Mira is loyally doing her duty as a Princess even though she likes the freedom of being an ordinary person on Earth. And again the jokes are not all that funny--I think I smirked once at the superdeformed look on Takumi's face when he learned something shocking. For the millionth time, the basic test of a new show is that unless it is outrageously funny, it must leave me with a question that I want an answer to, and I can't really think of any here. I don't really care whether Takumi and Mira fall in love, since they remain largely strangers, and I don't really care whether Mira accomplishes the mission she was assigned, since I know virtually nothing about the supposedly gargantuan problem back on planet Wid.
