Superior spiritual beings known as Gods have descended to Earth. They did this because they had become terribly bored and had decided to set up a system in which humans could play games with them. Games take place within what are known as Elements, 'the playground of the Gods'. Humans players, or Apostles, are granted an ability known as Arise, which makes them temporarily immortal. If they win a game they are allowed to keep some of the special abilities they gained during it. Three losses permanently disqualifies an Apostle from further games. Anyone who wins ten games will be given a 'Celebration', though exactly what that is remains unknown. So far the best Apostle is Fay Theo Philus, who has won three. He is summoned to take charge of Lady Leoleshea, who was found frozen in a 3,000 year old glacier and is believed to be a God herself.

(One episode watched):

For all the complex trappings of the odd premise of this show, something was definitely missing. Perhaps the best indicator of that was the trouble I had assigning keywords to this show. It doesn't seem to be a comedy, I didn't detect much drama, it's too soon to say whether romance will occur, and while some games definitely involve action the only one we have seen Fay and Leshea play definitely did not. The card game they played was not exactly exciting, even if Leshea had made it somewhat more fancy. Will each episode contain a fairly well known game of some sort, modified a little, as Fay and Leshea struggle to rack up ten wins without three losses? If I understood correctly, Leshea isn't a true God anymore even though she retains remarkable powers (we are told she could reduce the entire city to ash in the blink of an eye if she wished). But she wants to be one again, and thus will compete as an Apostle. Nevertheless, I never felt any sort of thrill or intrigue as the premise was laid out in episode one. We don't learn much about the Gods, and other than them being super powerful there doesn't seem to be much that is special or interesting about them. How did they come to be so bored? Were these games already underway 3000 years ago, when Leshea was frozen? This isn't Earth, is it, since we are told that 93% of this world remains 'hostile and unexplored'. It all seems kind of nonsensical to me. What's the worst thing that could happen? While they are incredibly powerful I never got the impression that the Gods had any malevolent intentions, at least not if Leshea is typical of them. Do the people worship them, or resent being controlled by them, or what? It seems like a major entertainment industry has been created to televise games. And the show commits the cardinal sin of leaving the two main characters with simplistic and uninteresting personalities. How did Fay come to be as skillful an Apostle, and as famous as he is? Does he have any hidden weaknesses? How did Leshea manage to become frozen in a glacier? With the main characters still largely strangers, I can't care a whole lot whether they win or lose the games they play. I would bet a million dollars that Fay will never ask Leshea to explain how Gods think and why they enjoy gaming so much. It seems that a premise like this one creates a tremendous opportunity for a truly mind blowing story, but all the signs are that it will go to waste.
