In the year 2005, a race of alien monsters called Zonders emerge from underground and launch a series of attacks on the city of Tokyo. The only defense against these creatures is the secret agency known as the Gutsy Geoid Guard (or 3G) and their ultimate weapon, the awesome giant robot GaoGaiGar. GaoGaiGar's pilot, Guy Shishio, is a former astronaut who was nearly killed two years before when the Zonders first crashed to earth. Guy's life was spared when a mysterious robot lion called Galeon pulled him from the burning shuttle and brought him to Earth. Guy's father, Leo, then used Galeon's technology to rebuild his shattered son as a cyborg, in the hopes that he could stop the aliens when they appear. Now, with Galeon as its core, GaoGaiGar fights to protect Earth. He is aided by a team of transforming robots and by a young boy named Mamoru, who has the power to purify the Zonders' cores, and seems to be connected to the mysterious Galeon.

Gaogaigar has many of the familiar tropes you'd find of the mecha genre with hot-blooded characters, super robots, a young male lead who is an alien from another planet with the power to neutralize the enemy threat, defying the laws of physics to defeat seemingly unstoppable foes, and a "monster of the day" focus for a good amount of its run. With the show aimed at children and seemingly introducing new mecha and weapons in many episodes to promote as merchandising for the series, these elements are also not as surprising. But at the same time, the show has a certain charm to it with how it carries itself that it's still fairly entertaining to see in small doses with how it embraces these cliches and its second half shows the conflict escalating with the Zonder threat as they a more direct approach to stopping GGG in halting their plans. Still, the first half of the series is a bit of a slog to get through due to its "monster of the day" plot and the characters don't have much to show for depth. Super robot mecha fans should feel at home watching this. But if you're looking for any deeper storytelling, you aren't likely to get as much enjoyment out of this series.
