The year 1999, the Idelians, an alien civilization that has traveled 200,000 years looking for a new world, attacks Earth. The planet's military forces are no match for the aliens, only the specialized Dorvack unit commanded by Colonel Takagi and their Variable Machines piloted by Masato, Louise and Pierre stand in their way.

Like many titles aimed for kids in the 1980s, the main purpose of Dorvack was to sell model toys of the mecha and battleships used by both the human and Idelian races throughout the show's 36-episode run. This leads the storytelling and characters to largely be pretty simple with its focus on the conflict taking place throughout much of the first half of the series before the conflict shifts dealing with the Idelians' leader, Zelar. The fights breaking out between factions largely makes up the main story of the series, with a number of episodic stories peppered in to give the conflicts some kind of purpose. However these stories largely feel superficial, especially with how the attempts at exploring the back stories of several of the major characters and a few shocking story developments get handled. Without taking the time to focus on the characters and flesh them out, it makes any problems they deal with feel more like they exist to pad out the show's runtime instead of creating any genuine sense of connection to them. While the visuals to the series are competent given the time they were animated, I do have to call out the show's soundtrack with how generic it regularly sounds throughout Dorvack's run and not doing the best job to add any emotion or suspense to the title's key scenes. I rarely have gripes to make about anime soundtracks typically, but the lack of care put into it here easily makes it among one of the worst soundtracks I've listened to for a series. In short, I'd say seek out other mecha titles of the era like Kyoshin Gorg or Votoms that offer more engaging storytelling than what this walking promotion offers up.
