This was one of those shows which I needed to use the ANN synopsis for, because episode one made little sense and left me scratching my head. For one thing, there was no mention whatsoever about the 'psychological thriller' that Ichikawa thinks he is playing a part in. All we got was that he considers himself to be 'messed up in the head' and 'a bloodthirsty beast'. My impression was that he was strongly tempted to commit murder--not exactly the sort of main character you expect. But with time I couldn't help suspecting that this show is supposed to be a comedy (selecting keywords was difficult). But I couldn't be quite sure, because the jokes were painfully weak--I bet that I, a person with no particular talent for comedy, could make this show somewhat funnier if given the chance. Why the hell did Ichikawa roll his bike into a canal? Was that supposed to be funny? Anna turns out to be pretty dimwitted for a girl who usually seems stylish and cool; I guess that was a joke, too. "You're pretty funny, Ichikawa" she remarks at one point. But this show as a whole is not very funny at all, and the only way to tolerate his hateful personality would be if it was. I don't get this anime at all. Yet I watched episode two. Things seem to have settled into a groove; that is, Yamada does silly stuff and Ichikawa deals with it. I'm still trying to figure out how his hateful, murderous inner mind can be made palatable to the viewer (though it is just mentioned once in this episode). How did he come to be like this? Can he ever change? And, how am I to laugh at the jokes while knowing his secret? Last updated Saturday, April 22 2023. Created Wednesday, April 05 2023. |
