Ars no Kyojuu

It's hard to put into words, but something was missing from episode one of this show. Clearly a good deal of effort had been put into it but it didn't 'grab' me. We meet an extensive cast of characters, but maybe we meet too many too quickly and as a result no single character gets a good enough introduction for us to bond to him/her. Also, we don't seem to get a good enough introduction to the plot itself--22 (or 'Kumi' as she now calls herself) possesses some fantastic power which is why the bad government wants to recapture her so badly. But fantastic powers and bad governments are dime-a-dozen in anime and I didn't notice anything really noteworthy about this premise. This show failed the time-honored test that it must raise a question that I really, really want an answer to. It didn't. At the end I just felt confused--or maybe I should say whatever was supposed to enthral me hadn't happened yet. I wanted to watch one more episode to see if things would come together, and I'm pretty sure I did, but with things as unexciting as they were I had forgotten almost everything by then. There were far too many new anime in the Winter 2023 season, and I didn't have time to give this show a close inspection. But I believe it did not fare very well in polls at ANN.
