Rookie policewoman Mai Kawai is ready to quit the force. The work is hard and low ranking officers like herself are often viewed with contempt. Then her new instructor, Sergeant Fuji, arrives and Mai is immediately struck by the beauty of this fellow policewoman. The word is that she is very good at her job, but also that she was transferred as a result of bullying her former junior officer.

The presence of two cute policewomen immediately reminded me of the old You're Under Arrest. The OP sequence suggests that two civilian guys will hang around with them a good deal (actually, they seem to be plain clothes detectives). The impression I got from the first minutes of the show itself were that this seemed to be an amusing show with a fairly well thought-out plot to it. More sophisticated, that is, than the average anime comedy. It is, at least in part, a comedy, it turns out. Fuji's comment that "A gracious, kind woman who likes kids would never join the police!" made me smirk. Despite her amazing skill, Fuji can be irritable at times, which makes her more human and likable. She also has a curious philosophy that a police officer's main role is to act as a sort of 'punching bag' for society. The humor is kind of sly and witty, with jokes slipping into lines that characters (mainly Fuji) obviously had not meant to be funny. It sounds like whoever wrote this knew a good deal about the life of a police officer (apparently there are special apartment buildings for their use). While the police are obviously depicted as heroes, the fact that they often get little thanks for their work and are under considerable stress (even in Japan!) isn't glossed over. What sort of longterm plot, if any, the series will have remains to be seen, but such a thing hasn't been ruled out altogether. And even if this show is little more than skits based on the lives of policewomen, they seem like amusing ones. Well, this show passed its first test: I plan to watch episode two!

At times this can seem like a sort of police cheerleader show: here's what the police do for you, support them however you can, etc, etc. The details of crime and what goes on behind the scenes can be sordid and demoralizing--not exactly what qualifies as 'entertainment'. I detected one LOL joke in episode two (the barbecue one). It looks like Mai's temptation to quit the police has vanished, even though I wouldn't say she and Fuji are close friends as of yet. The two of them haven't grown all that much personality and the show seems to be more about unexciting, routine day-to-day police work than the two of them, which seems like a mistake to me.
