Uh-oh, I thought to myself: a wide ranging cast of flamboyant characters in fancy outfits. More often than not, in my experience, that is indicative of a show that will put style over substance. What are the odds that so many characters will be well developed? The ANN synopsis described Yuki as 'a lonely boy with no family' who 'travels to Harajuku to see his favorite artist', but I don't recall any of those points being made clear in episode one. When I noticed that these performers had fangs as well, I was only more confused. Vampire rock groups? Apparently their music sort of hypnotizes people so that the vampires can dine on their blood. You might think that this premise was meant for a comedy, but no, it is quite serious. Visual Prison is a yearly competition to see which vampire band has the best song, and the members of the winning group enjoy 'great powers' until the next contest. Maybe the idea here was that the music alone would satisfy viewers and there wouldn't be much need for a good plot. Much to his surprise, Yuki is recognized as a credible competitor and given the band name 'Oz'. Part of me does not care whether he wins or not, since he remains largely a stranger, while part of me is (slightly) curious where this WTF premise might go. So, depending on how I feel about this show a week or two from now, maybe I will watch some more. (Ultimately, I didn't). Last updated Friday, January 14 2022. Created Saturday, October 23 2021. |
