When I first started watching episode one and it became clear that Japanese gang violence would be involved, my response was to go watch something else. The anime about gangs that I have watched always seemed to be shallow matters of good gangs versus evil ones, and I had yet to see a show of the type that was engaging and interesting. But maybe this is the show I have been waiting for. When I watched the entire episode I found it to be a good deal better than I had expected. I certainly wasn't expecting the time travel twist, and it looks like Takemichi's old friends (who he hasn't seen in twelve years) will play a part as well. Maybe he'll convince them to join with him to prevent the Manji gang from becoming the criminal organization that it otherwise will, which is sort of typical, but episode one of this show was fun and perhaps while the standard formula will be followed it will be done better than usual here. Using time-travel to defeat an evil gang is frankly more likely to happen than just an anti-gang composed of cool-ass guys doing it. On a side note, why are so many 2021 anime set in the year 2017? I think I've counted at least three. After watching episode two I added 'Violent' to the keywords. Perhaps the greatest 'violence' is not the physical beatings the characters must often endure but the sense of hopelessness and utter desperation in their dead-end lives. It was hard to watch at times and I was tempted to go watch something else. There seems to be little reason to believe that these five teenagers can possibly triumph over such a brutal and merciless gang, which is dispiriting. I was thrown for a loop by the twist that a couple of the leaders of the Manji gang are portrayed as fairly cool dudes who take a liking to Takemichi as a result of his courage. Are these guys villains or not? I didn't see where this was going, Takemichi has yet to try to convince his old friends that he's come from the future and needs their help, and the ugly brutality was a definite turn-off, so I decided to drop Tokyo Revengers.
