At Tsukinomiya High School Ruka Hanari is a new transfer student at an unusual time of the year. She's a shy girl who doesn't interact well with strangers and feels she 'messes up' a lot. Her new roommate is Hiori Hirahara, who has a strange habit of going missing for days at a time. Ruka finds that there's something funny going on here, something related to strange rings and even stranger alterations in space/time.

(Two episodes watched):

I got the impression from episode one that something was definitely coming together here as all sorts of cryptic hints are dropped. We get terms like 'fragments' and 'reflector' and 'leap range', whatever those are, but also the sense that these pieces of the puzzle will probably fit together eventually. It is made clear right from the start that eventually there will be battles between some strange creatures known as the 'Sephirot' and sword-wielding, fancily dressed girls--a more serious sort of Mahou Shojo, apparently. Still, just what is going on remains a mystery after episode one; nobody has explained the basics to Ruka or anyone else. I wondered why several characters, including Ruka, who witness bizarre occurrences like time itself seemingly seizing up for a moment don't bother to say anything about them. I didn't know if there would be enough to this show to make it worth watching for no less than 24 episodes. Episode two didn't clarify things much; something about a person needing 'strong emotions' (or something like that) to make use of these rings. It looks like there are bad girls as well as good ones employing them, but why remains unclear. What is liable to happen if nobody becomes a heroic 'Selector'? I had some trouble keeping track of the numerous characters, perhaps because most haven't really been introduced well enough or haven't done anything memorable yet. In general, I am wary of committing to six months of this.
