One day Kohei Makino is asked to do a favor for classmate Mana Nagase. She has been identified by the Venus Project, an AI program, as having potential talent as an Idol and is about to undergo an audition at Hoshimi Productions. She's uncomfortable and would like someone she knows to accompany her. Makino agrees, and when Mana is hired he learns that he, too, has been hired as her part-time manager--that was a condition Mana set for signing a contract. Makino oversees Mana's meteoric rise to fame. They never fall in love, but he is absolutely loyal to her. Then, at the verge of complete triumph, Mana is killed in an accident. Makino's new task will be to train a new ten-girl Idol group. He has one major advantage: Mana's ghost occasionally pays him a visit and offers advice.

An Idol series with the keyword 'Supernatural'? That's unusual. Episode one quickly gave me the impression that there was something noteworthy about this show. I liked the way it laid the framework for this story by telling us about why Makino reveres Mana. Their story seemed pretty plausible (other than the ghost bit, but I can give that a pass) and it only makes sense that he would want to make her proud of what he accomplishes as an Idol manager. Based on the prologue, I had a feeling that some sort of tragedy would befall Mana, but it was handled well. The dialogue is fairly complex and teaches us what we need to know about the characters. Based on the credits on the ANN page, it looks like Mana will play a major role as a ghost, even a bigger one than Makino does. I was a little nervous about there being no less than ten members of the new group; I hoped that this wouldn't be the sort of show where each of them gets an episode to explore their backgrounds and then the series basically runs out of time. But this could have been much worse, and I was aboard for the time being. In episode two we learn that among the new candidates are Mana's younger sister, Kotono. Fortunately she and another candidate, Sakura Kawasaki, seem to be the main characters instead of the attention being more-or-less equally distributed among all ten Idols. Compared to the show I had just watched, I couldn't help noticing that Makino has a remarkably mature attitude towards these girls, which is to say he's only doing his job, not trying to sexually exploit them. Maybe he's secretly in love with Mana. Some sort of a story seemed to be coming together even if it is a bit schmaltzy at times. But episode two hadn't been quite as intriguing as episode one, and neither was episode three. Mana's ghost seems to be little more than an observer, who doesn't want to get involved with her own sister much less anyone else. What unique, original problem is there which needs to be solved? About the worst thing that could conceivably happen is that this new group doesn't turn out to be the best one in Japan. As a result, I was starting to feel bored and wonder if this show was worth watching after all. An interesting premise is set up, but what is done with it was a good deal less interesting. I ultimately quit watching.
