Pretty touching for a 45-minute OVA. This animated take on Spirit of Wonder focuses on tavern owner Miss China, who gets a good amount of attention with her character showing her strong and insecure sides as she deals with the feelings she has for young inventor Jim, who attempts to give her a gift for her birthday connected to his latest invention. The eccentric optimism that Jim and Dr. Breckenridge have for their work is retained here with the latter inventing items that require some suspension of disbelief with the technology they employ seeming too advanced for early 20th century work. The visuals sport some realistic-looking character designs and vivid background shots that are nice on the eyes for an early 90s anime. Miss China's Ring is a bit short to be worth rewatching multiple times. However if you're in the mood for a relaxing quick watch, you can't go wrong with checking it out if you have a means of watching it.

This is a whimsical, good-natured little story that starts out as sci-fi in the classic H.G. Wells style and ends up as a romance. Miss China herself is a wonderful character, confident and able to take care of herself without being obnoxious about it. All the other characters are likeable too, and the romance is charmingly played. Hint: the ring isn't what you think it will be!

The character designs are very good, realistic but with a sense of personality. The backgrounds are also nicely atmospheric. However, the costumes on the Western characters are skimpy on detail and not very historically accurate, which detracts somewhat from the overall effect. I've only been able to see the dub, which has good performances for the main characters, although some of the minor ones are not so great.

Bottom line: Not flashy or profound, but definitely worth seeking out if you're in the mood for something sweet and fun.
