The story focuses on high school girl Nagisa Yukiai who lives in a seaside town. She has believed her grandmother's story that spirits dwell in words and they are called "kotodama" (word spirit). One day, she strays into a mini FM station that has not been used for years. As an impulse of the moment, she tries to talk like a DJ using the facility. Kimikoe mostly plays out as a light slice-of-life drama about a teenage girl named Nagisa who has the ability to see kotodama, word spirits that bring their speaker's words into reality and comes to utilize an old radio station within her town that had been out of use for years since the mother of one of Nagisa's classmates, Shion, had been in a coma. Basically, the film tries to go for a sort of radio club premise as several other girls eventually join throughout its run. However, the majority of them are irrelevant in the plot's developments as Kimikoe is more Shion and Nagisa's story. That story does have a solid resolution, though it did feel like this was overlooked in the middle of the film's run thanks to its focus on the other girls that join Nagisa at the radio station. For a movie, the animation for Kimikoe is on the simple side for scenery and characters. But I suppose this works well with the film's slice-of-life premise. Fans of slice-of-life anime may get enjoyment out of this film, though it felt like Kimikoe may have worked better if either it was adapted into a TV anime or cut down on the number of characters introduced throughout its run.
