Hina Tsurugi is an easily grossed-out city girl who has just moved to a small seaside town. There she finds herself drafted into joining the Breakwater Club, an all-girl fishing outfit. Though reluctant at first, she comes to enjoy the sport and appreciate the new friends (and an old one) she makes in the group.

Diary of Our Days at the Breakwater is another slice-of-life comedy involving girls in a school club, in this case breakwater fishing. While the series keeps things simple with defining the personalities of the girls within the club, it does devote focus to them going to different locales near watersides to go after any fish. The fishing element of the series does have some educational value involving fishing that includes identifying specific types of bait, fishing methods, and preparing caught fish. But like other slice-of-life titles of its ilk, how well you warm up to this series will depend in your interest on its premise. At least for me, will say fishing's not my cup of tea and there isn't much else outside of its premise and simple characters that I could gravitate toward with this series.

(All episodes watched):

This was one of the last of the new Spring 2020 series that I watched, because at first glance it hadn't seemed very exciting. It looked like a typical 'smile comedy' basically--not funny enough to actually make me laugh more than once in awhile, just good enough to make me smile. But there seemed to be a sort of a plot to the show--at least the title sort of implied that there would be. We get a decent introduction to the cast: club president Yuuki Kuroiwa is lazy and laid-back, but manipulative and a schemer. Hina's childhood friend Natsumi Hodaka is rambunctious, the tall Makoto Ohno is quiet and reserved, and Hina herself is a city girl who knows nothing about fishing. I was left curious about where things would go, and I learned a few things about seaside fishing in Japan, so contrary to my first impressions I decided to watch some more. Episode two taught me how to cast a line with a fishing pole, for one thing, while episode three was about catching the 'flathead' fish. This show seems to fit into the trend of 'info-comedies'--shows which are only modestly funny but attempt to compensate by teaching us something too. It definitely isn't brilliant but it also doesn't demand much concentration on my part, and sometimes that's what I need. And it gradually became clear that this show had something else going for it. While this is a lightweight, silly-funny show the characters are genuinely likable; after awhile they seem like your own friends. This show grew on me and I am glad I watched it. The true mark of a good show is that you regret it coming to an end; and that was what happened with Houkago Teibou Nisshi.

(After episode three the show was delayed for nearly three months by the pandemic before resuming)
