This was surprisingly funny given how nonsensical and barely filled with plot this series was. Ultimate Teacher is a manic romp focused on Ganpachi's bizarre and nutty methods to try getting control over a school overrun with delinquents, with some surprising secrets surrounding the man's true origins and a teenage girl who serves to oppose the buffoon's attempts to "re-educate" the delinquents. The series had great comedic timing on the execution of its gags which consisted of shocking revelations and the bizarre activities of several of the anime's prominent characters such as Ganpachi and Hinako. You'll even find yourself laughing senseless over the Spider-Man nod from one character that appears later in the OVA. The animation style is quite outdated considering this is a late 80s anime and the quality of it looks more on par with a TV anime of the time period. Still, the drawing style goes along well with Ultimate Teacher's bizarre comedy with how over-the-top the designs of many male characters are. Do be warned that if you hate mindless comedy or anything without a coherent plot that Ultimate Teacher may not be for you. But if you are looking for a one hour mindless laugh-fest and you enjoy old school anime, then Ultimate Teacher is a hidden gem of the most bizarre variety that is worth looking into.

Ultimate Teacher is strange to say the least. Still, there's an undeniable magnetism to it that will keep the viewer perversely engrossed. The character designs are nothing special, your standard late 80's crap, very similar to Rumiko Takahashi's art style. I can't say I'm a big fan, as I much prefer the sleeker more stylized look of the current anime trend. Still, Hinako is sexy and Ganpachi is creepy, so I guess the intended reactions were achieved. I did love the Spider Man, and the similarities to a certain American wall-crawler were too obvious to not be a tribute; the costume's color scheme, the sticking to walls, even a web-shooter attached to his ass. Hilarious. The Spider Man alone was worth price of admission. The animation was fair to good, with some nicely executed fights and good use of "camera" angles. The backgrounds were too bright and cheerful for my tastes, but I suppose they fit the mood. The story involves a new Teacher at Emperor High who's determined to return discipline to the school. He feels that the best way to do this is to break the student's leader, the super powered(?) Hinako. Numerous plots ranging from charlie horse attacks to drowning to pelvic thrusting fail and the climactic showdown is a running battle with the Ultimate Teacher, Hinako and the Spider Man. The pacing is manic, the gags fly so fast that even when one bombs there is another so quickly one doesn't really notice. When it is revealed just what the Ultimate Teacher Ganpachi is, it is unexpected and strangely appropriate. Unfortunately, the anime is hampered by an irritating voice cast, cheesy music, disappointing animation, overused Gym-Shorts jokes, and a sadly anti-climactic ending. Still, overall, I'm glad I watched it, as I enjoyed it and I recommend it to others. 3-21-02 Last updated Friday, March 22 2002. Created Friday, March 22 2002. |
