Re:Stage! Dream Days
(One-and-a-half episodes watched):|
By all rights, yet another anime with an Idol theme should have fallen flat before me, but for some reason I initially found this show to be modestly fun. Perhaps it was because of the silly, humorous approach that it seemed to take to what is often seen as a deadly serious, cut-throat line of work. The fact that we get to know Shikimiya fairly well as she experiences her first day at a new school definitely doesn't hurt. The amazing coincidence--she can dance in perfect sync with another girl, Tsuki, who she has barely met--is highly unlikely but I was prepared to give it a pass. I had already gotten to like both of them and hope they would succeed. The jokes were hardly LOL funny but along with my curiosity about how these girls would manage to put an act together, they were adequate. When I finally started watching episode two, however, I found that the originality had largely evaporated. It seemed that this club having a cryptic name was about the only semblance of mystery and unpredictability to the story; otherwise, it was just girls with squeeky, childish voices trying to lash up an idol act. Their personalities are too simplistic for the story to have much complexity; and as a result there didn't seem to be any intriguing handicaps which they would have to overcome, other than being teenagers at best. I found my interest to be rapidly flagging and didn't watch the entire second episode.
