Ex-convict turned Rakugo apprentice Yotaro has finally taken the name of Yurakutei Sukeroku III, and with his master Yakumo's permission has attained the lofty rank of shin'uchi. He assumes the name at a critical time for Rakugo, with audiences fewer than ever. At the same time he has started acting as a husband to Konatsu, who is now a single mother. Yotaro thus begins the struggle to fill the role of Sukeroku, both as the future of Rakugo and as a part of Yakumo's and Konatsu's lives.

This second season of Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu focuses more on the developments of its major characters with Yakumo, his new apprentice Yotaro, and Sukeroku's daughter Konatsu. Their developments are entwined with one another throughout this second season's run with each having their varying developments with Yakumo having survivor's guilt over Sukeroku's death from the last season, Konatsu baring a grudge with Yakumo for her parents' deaths, and Yotaro in a similar position as Sukeroku from the prior series in being a former felon trying to reform through performing rakugo. This is great development to see with these characters throughout Shouwa Genroku's run, on top of the continued focus on rakugo performances seen through Yakumo and Yotaro's performances that shows the continued struggles of rakugo as a form of entertainment into the modern age and how the performances of the characters serve as a reflection of their personalities and current outlooks on living. The series is still an acquired taste with its very Japanese themes. But if you enjoyed this anime's first season, this one is a definite recommendation to check out.
