Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun
(One episode watched):|
There seems to be a subgenre in anime comedy which involves stories about a teenage boy with some sort of strange trait. There's the guy with ESP (Saiki Kusuo no Psi Nan), the guy who's secretly extremely paranoid (Handa-kun), the guy who is inexplicably cool (Sakamoto desu ga?), etc. Sometimes these stories work and sometimes they don't; being comedies, they have got to be fairly funny, and if they aren't funny enough to be worth watching for the jokes alone, there has got to be some sort of interesting story as well. When they fail, it's often because the gimmick that the show is built on was sufficient for an episode (or half-episode), but an entire series shouldn't have been based on it, because it's just not all that hilarious. My feeling after watching episode one of Keppeki was that the jokes weren't terribly funny and I didn't sense much of a story coming together either. How many jokes can be squeezed out of a guy being a cleanliness freak? If even the first episode was so-so, I doubt if enough of them could be amassed to keep an entire series going. And so far, there is little to Aoyama's personality other than his obsession; the signs are that the makers were gambling that the jokes alone would be adequate to carry this show forward, but they overestimated the quality of the gags. This is not a terrible show--I would guess that if I viewed the whole thing, I would rate it as a 'Watch'--but I do not have time for Watch grade shows nowadays.
