First year high school student Kurogo Kurusu's grandfather instilled in him a love of traditional Japanese Kabuki theater, and today he hopes to start a Kabuki club at his school. Kabukibu focuses on Kurusu's efforts to form a kabuki theater club for his high school due to his passion for it. The series plays out the familiar tropes of a series focused on a school club with the first few episodes focused on trying to find members and later ones exploring the club's challenges with becoming successful and becoming a cohesive unit to achieve their goals. Many of the characters have their character types they largely fall under with some of their personalities and developments getting fleshed out, though this element does suffer to some extent with a few characters coming across as unlikeable and intolerant due to how they are portrayed. An interesting element explored to the focus on kabuki is the club's efforts with trying to make it more accessible to their current generation, something relatable to kabuki fans due to the struggles of Japan's more traditional forms of entertainment trying to attract younger generations to them. In short, Kabukibu's storytelling is largely nothing you may have likely seen before with its focus on the formation and success of a school club. But the storytelling for it and the passion that all characters involved in the club have for kabuki shows through enough where I'd at least say give this series a watch.

My first impression of Kabukibu was that this show wasn't brilliant, wasn't uproariously funny, wasn't exactly exciting--yet I sort of liked it. And that was the impression I kept to the end. Perhaps the notion of a boy with a passion who wants to pursue it, and has set a vague yet ambitious goal to attain, intrigued me. Kurusu wants to spread word of something he likes to others who might like it as well. The general lack of interest in Kabuki among modern day teens, and the lack of confidence and support that he is getting from his school, act as a serious headwind that will have to be overcome somehow. It's sort of like some American teenager trying to revive interest in Shakespeare over here. I knew little about Kabuki theater, but I was a little curious and this show was educational. Perhaps the secret is that telling a halfway decent story has priority over telling unremarkable jokes, while in many anime it's the other way round. Unless the jokes are clearly lights-out hilarious (which doesn't happen often--I don't think there were any shows of this sort this season), pretty much every anime should adopt this approach. Tell a story, just in case the jokes in your show don't seem as funny to the viewers as they did to you. Even the plot isn't brilliant--of course Ebihara, the uppity Kabuki expert will eventually make peace with the club and join them, we all know that--but how exactly it happens is fun to learn. Perhaps another reason I liked Kabukibu was because the characters have some personality to them, while many anime have weak and uninteresting ones. This show remained fun for me and I always looked forward to new episodes; it was perhaps my second or third favorite show of the season. The series ends with a fairly elaborate and impressive performance by the team, which demonstrates that they have indeed achieved their goal. Some likeable teenagers with a curious hobby attempt to accomplish something, even though the odds are against them--what's not to like? Kabukibu was a pleasant surprise, and I will probably watch it again someday. I wish this had been a two-season show.
