Betterman mashes up mecha and sci-fi/ horror in an organization's mission to halt a viral threat that is infecting humanity. The series is effective as a horror title with the mood it conveys in many episodes with the members of Akamatsu Industries clashing with the viral threat that comes in varying forms and the enemy threat often exploiting their fear of the unknown through monster of the day threats or some form of psychic attacks on the minds of the company members. In addition, the series creates a somewhat engaging mystery to explore the cause of the viral threat and the mysterious mutant Betterman who often helps save members of Akamatsu against viral threats. Beyond aesthetics, the characters mostly follow stock archetypes typical of mecha anime and are bland to a great degree with personality and depth. In addition, the plot can be hard to follow at many points since quite a bit of scientific jargon and explanations are laid out to explain how the viral threat, psychic attacks, Betterman and other circumstances are affecting human targets and the various applications of their attacks or influence on the plot and characters. Overall in spite of having some engaging elements thanks to its horror genre and mystery, Betterman is mostly a forgettable title with typical character types and hard-to-follow series terminology and actions thanks to its heavy dipping into scientific jargon, theories and explanations.
