Taboo Tattoo

Taboo Tattoo was seeming pretty typical right from the start. The scary (sort of) opening scene, the longtime female friend who acts like a guy's wife, a dose of fanservice, and, perhaps most typical of all, jokes which fall flat. This show seems to be using the "I'm nobody--until I find that I not only have the same special ability as others, but I have an even better version of it" template. The explanation behind the 'Sealed' system wasn't very convincing. Why would any country (the US in this case) spend good money to create a super hand-to-hand combat system rather than long range weaponry? If the system is so awesome, why didn't the solid blow that Seigi received at one point (before enabling his own powers) kill or cripple him instantly? The action got pretty graphic and disturbing at times. A comment that "Justice without strength is not justice" sounded like "might makes right" to me. The bad guys are bad because they are ugly and do bad stuff, not because they have any sort of motivations or personalities or anything like that. The characters in general seem pretty stereotypical and it's hard for me to care what becomes of them. If I had been offered a chance to salvage this show, I think the first thing I would do would be to reallocate some airtime to making Seigi into more of a guy who viewers could identify with and like. Basically, nothing about this show surprised me. With impotent jokes and a story which doesn't intrigue me, what is there to watch for?
