(Two episodes watched): I was not eager for another fantasy world magic show, but once the story moved to more-or-less modern day Japan, my hopes rose. The animation was pretty neat. The character designs, and in particular the faces, reminded me of Knights of Sidonia. I bet the same people did both, but have gotten better at their craft in the meantime. However, a new problem soon arose. Whenever a story is told, the teller chooses how much information and which details to provide to the listener. If the story is simplistic, and pretty much all of the details are provided, the listener is liable to feel that there's no need to employ his/her imagination, and loses interest. If not enough detail is provided, the listener is liable to become confused and frustrated, and likewise loses interest. I felt that BB was the latter sort of show. What, again, is a Bubuki? What is a Buranki? Where did they come from? What's with this strange sky world which apparently floats above the earth? In a way, BB is guilty of telling us both too little and too much, because while few details of how the hell things wound up like this are provided to us, the situation still seems pretty familiar: the big bad government persecuting magic users with a special police force. I can't keep track of countless characters when I don't even have a firm grasp on the basic premise. I was frustrated, largely because this had seemed a neat show briefly before the confusion and predictability set in. I decided that I would watch some more of BB, but it would need to shape up soon. After two episodes, I honestly still have little idea what is going on here. Something about whether the protagonist's mother is really to blame for the freaky mecha running wild in Japan and smashing things up. But I still know little about the characters, how they got their powers, what those powers are, what exact cause they are fighting for, etc, etc. I can't help thinking that the makers of this show were confident that it would be so cool that there would be no need to include many details about WTF is going on. Maybe they were right in respect to some people, but this show only gives me a headache, and I think I will drop it. Last updated Wednesday, February 15 2017.
